The Open Space Workshop Series 2008
Noted plein air painters will teach workshops or give lectures and demonstrations during the period the Open Space: A View with Room exhibition is on view. The classes will be conducted at the Open Space Visitor Center or on Open Space lands — from the foothills of the Sandia Mountains to the Rio Grande bosque and the Petroglyph monument area on the west.
These workshops are open to PAPNM members and non-member artists working in all media. Register for as many workshops as you like. Space is limited, so sign up quickly!

Waid Griffin will guide you in the process of using color at every stage of a painting's creation: the idea and its expressive possibilities and compositional structure; the development by controlling the light and pushing through the “confusion;” the final orchestration of moving the eye into and across the space. This information can be a huge piece in solving the puzzle of color mastery.

Working from a slide and/or a print, well known landscape painter Bob Kuester will show how he tones his canvas in a middle value, then wipes out lights and adds darks. He will explain his rationale and feelings throughout the painting process, touching on most of the considerations “alla prima” oil painting requires.

Demonstration and critique will be the methods of inquiry into the universe of value and color temperature. Learn to ask the four questions for self correction: “Is the painting too light? or too dark? Is the color temperature too warm? or too cool?” This workshop would be appropriate for beginners to advanced painters.

CREATING THE WOW FACTOR, by Identifying a strong central theme, is the first step in creating a painting that has lasting visual impact. Then using all the “tools” in the artist's toolbox, Cody will demonstarte how to design and paint in ways that support and enhance that idea. The “tools” of composition, value, drawing, color edges and surface texture are all brought to bear in a manner that will be fresh and exciting to you and your collectors. Creating effective lead-ins, isolating focal points, contrast, and fi nal orchestration are also on the menu. Cody is a “user-friendly” instructor who shares his passion for painting in a clear and concise manner, making him popular with beginner to advanced artists.
